A retired QC is found murdered, a slip of paper in his wallet that reads: I'm going to kill you for what you did. Then someone takes a shot at Rebus' arch rival, Big Ger Cafferty, who reveals he has received the same note. Rebus is the only one Cafferty will speak with so he is brought into the investigation as a consultant.
In a lot of long-running series, you get the feeling the author only continues them because they are sure money-makers, but at best, the stories are phoned in. Not so with Ian Rankin. He cares about these characters, even the "baddies", and it shows. Even Dogs in the Wild may be his best Rebus yet.

This may be the best in the series: complex, startling at moments, chillingly familiar at others. The various plots twist in upon themselves until you see all their underbellies, and while it’s not a pretty sight, it’s the secret that must be revealed.
amazing! brilliant even. this isn't the first Rebus novel i've read, but it is among the very best. and that's saying a lot because it's a great series.

Well plotted and interesting story.
Several seemingly unconnected murders or attempts but Big Ger Cafferty eventually makes the link with a remand home way back.
Rebus gets himself attached to the squad as a consultant. It would seem the great and the 'good' of Edinburg may have had a lot to hide.
Meanwhile his old opponent Malcolm Fox is seconded to an undercover team investigating a Glasgow gangster mob. A turf war is in the offing.
Rebus has sort of taken Fox under his wing, a turn up for the books! And there's a stray dog!

Another Rebus from Rankin, so it needs no precis, but it is possibly one of the very best.
I couldn't put it down. A great read.

Can't get enough of Rankin's John Rebus character. May he never retire!
I loved this ... but then it's been a couple of years since the last Rebus novel, so I was hanging out for it. Having said that, there was one big coincidence towards the end that I found a bit ... I don't know ... coincidental? But that aside, I loved it.
