A strong sequel continuing Kyoshi’s journey to establish herself as the avatar. There were a few things I liked less about this book than the Rise of Kyoshi. The pacing was less consistent and there wasn’t as much humor, leading to an overall darker tone and the last third of the book feeling rushed. Kyoshi’s stubbornness and judgments about Kuruk were frustrating at times, and combined with the pacing issues there’s less payoff when we see her grow. That being said, I love that the author doesn’t speak down to the YA audience and there are some truly beautiful moments of writing, especially in the more emotional scenes. Even though over 200 years pass between this book and the Kyoshi we see in the original show, you can easily see how she grows into the future version of Kyoshi and how she carries the lessons she learns throughout her life. I can’t wait to delve into more of the Avatar extended universe!

This isn’t much of a review, just wanting to highlight the aspect I enjoyed the most. Apart from that, this and Rise of Kyoshi are genuinely great reads with fun characters and plots that I felt actually served a purpose in the Avatar universe, rather than just being added for the sake of it. If you like Avatar, you'll definitely enjoy these books. I personally enjoyed this one more than the first just because I felt like it contained more of the ATLA charm than the first one did if that makes sense.
Anyway, the highlight I wanted to mention was learning about Avatar Kuruk. I find it really cool how finding out about a different Avatar through the current Avatar's eyes is always incredibly interesting, like when we learned about Roku's life which was one of my favourite episodes of ATLA, or Wan's life, it genuinely feels like you're reading a fictional history book. Even learning about Avatar Szeto was cool. I did not realize how good of an Avatar Kuruk was and how tragic his story is, and honestly would love to see a further adaptation going into his life in more detail. Manifesting Avatar Studios making a Kuruk movie. But yeah just something neat that I wanted to mention, where an Avatar sometimes feels more interesting and larger than life when you don't have all the pieces right away.
In conclusion, read the Kyoshi novels, they are good
