Like when Rise, this book carried me to completion in about 3 days so 5* because I really enjoyed reading it.

4.5/5 • Damn, my emotions are all over these pages because honestly what a rollercoaster. I can’t explain how MUCH I FEEL RIGHT NOW. First of all, Rangi and Kyoshi? I really loved how their relationship grew from the one in the first book and how Hei-Ran kind of entered into the story in a big way. It made it feel like Kyoshi finally had a family she had always yearned for. Everything was heartbreaking, almost like I could feel Kyoshi’s pain through the pages. She went through it all, but I think in the end, she finally found herself. It’s like watching someone bloom into the person they were always meant to be.

I really enjoyed this book, even if it didn’t hook me quite as much as the sequel.

I appreciated that Kyoshi fucked up, quite a lot, and her personality flaws consistently were actually flaws that made things worse. Sometimes almost too much - this book was much, much darker than I expected and sometimes almost painful to read through her depression and messing up.

But I thought Kuruk’s past was really well done (if also depressing), and goes to show that just as there are no perfect avatars, the flawed ones still had honor and tried, too.

I also really enjoyed Kyoshi’s relationship with Rangi and thought it was well done, with ups and downs but mostly they stayed as rocks for the other.

The Fire Nation politicking was also really interesting, even as I got such second hand embarrassment from Kyoshi bumbling her way through it.
