The Shadow of Kyoshi

F.C. Yee

4.27 AVERAGE

This was amazing end to the book series. Love the ending of avatar Kyoshi, but at the same time, leaving it open for future books (or other media). F.C. Yee is coming out with Avatar Yangchen’s book series soon and I can’t wait to read it. Always love exploring this world.

Didn’t like it as much as the first book, but still incredible. One of the most brutal deaths in Avatar omfg.

I finished The Rise of Kyoshi and The Shadow of Kyoshi back to back. These books are crazy good! I was so nervous that they wouldn't capture the same feeling and spark the same love I had for the Team Avatars I already knew. And wow. Not only do they remind me of the world of the Avatar, they are fully present in that world in their own right. F. C. Yee has complete understanding of the world and manipulates it with ease. I loved it all! The characters were dynamic and distinct, with Queer rep! The humor is there, the stakes are there, the atmosphere is there. Any expectations I had were completely exceeded.

Looked the first one. Had to push myself to finish this book.

Once again, Yee makes an amazing villain here in Yun, one befitting of the villain in the first book.

I think I have to rate this just a bit lower than Rise of Kyoshi, though. We didn't get nearly enough of the Flying Opera Company, which was one of the things that made me love the first book so much. And while I did enjoy the companions we got here, they didn't strike the same cord.

I did love Kyoshi's struggles here. There is a bleakness to much of this book, a near-impenetrable hopelessness that hope ends up in Pyrrhic victory, that I can't help but love. It is a tragedy, but one that lets Kyoshi grow into the Avatar we know.

Lots of the lore here is so great to see, though Kuruk here seems at odds with how we saw him in the show. I like his story, but it feels like he kind of lied to Aang in the finale, or at least wasn't as truthful as he could have been. Why would he lie to himself.

Overall, I definitely enjoyed this a lot, and it hurts a bit to only give it 3 stars, but there are just a few too many thorns to grip for me to rate it more tenderly.

Seems like there should’ve been 3

Pace was slow in some places, jumped too quickly in others. It was pretty good, but after the first book, I wanted a little more out of this one.
