The Shadow of Kyoshi

F.C. Yee

4.27 AVERAGE

Once again, Yee makes an amazing villain here in Yun, one befitting of the villain in the first book.

I think I have to rate this just a bit lower than Rise of Kyoshi, though. We didn't get nearly enough of the Flying Opera Company, which was one of the things that made me love the first book so much. And while I did enjoy the companions we got here, they didn't strike the same cord.

I did love Kyoshi's struggles here. There is a bleakness to much of this book, a near-impenetrable hopelessness that hope ends up in Pyrrhic victory, that I can't help but love. It is a tragedy, but one that lets Kyoshi grow into the Avatar we know.

Lots of the lore here is so great to see, though Kuruk here seems at odds with how we saw him in the show. I like his story, but it feels like he kind of lied to Aang in the finale, or at least wasn't as truthful as he could have been. Why would he lie to himself.

Overall, I definitely enjoyed this a lot, and it hurts a bit to only give it 3 stars, but there are just a few too many thorns to grip for me to rate it more tenderly.

Seems like there should’ve been 3

Pace was slow in some places, jumped too quickly in others. It was pretty good, but after the first book, I wanted a little more out of this one.

Digamos que sufrí (no precisamente en el buen sentido)

not as good as the first in the duology, felt a little scattered in the conflict, but still good. kyoshi is a very likable main character

4.5/5. so much better than book one i loved this so much. kyoshi my princess forever <3

another banger. very sad that my journey through the avatar universe novels has come to an end. i’ll eventually read the roku ones, but id like both to be out since i know it’ll end unresolved.

definitely didn’t like this one as much as the first. still loved it though!!

characters not quite as fun. i missed the flying opera company, but i’m glad they got to make a little visit right at the end i suppose. needed more rangi. did enjoy the extra hei-ran we got. and loved hearing from kuruk and yangchen. atuat and jinpa were alright but not as strong characters in my opinion. also just didn’t think yun was as fun an enemy as jianzhu. idk.

plot also not quite as fun. i enjoyed the extra time spent in the fire nation and the political squabbles i guess. but just preferred the daofei stuff in the first one more.

needed more kyoshi and rangi interactions. left a little high and dry.

idk. overall still loved it obv but not quite as good as the first. i’ll give it 5 stars but it doesn’t make my all time favs list. slightly disappointing but what can you do

I think people underestimate how difficult world-building in literature can be. It can be even more difficult fitting into an existing world like the ATLA series. F.C Yee does an incredible job both creating Kyoshi’s world and aligning with the existing ATLA framework. This book in particular highlights the struggle and complications of Avatarhood in a way that inspires empathy and frustration while reminding that our traumas are often shaped by others’ traumas.

Another excellent book in the Avatar universe. This is the follow up to The Rise of Kyoshi, I would recommend reading that one first. There is context that is important to Kyoshi's journey, and the other characters in the book. I would love more books on Kyoshi but the next book sounds interesting.
