The Shadow of Kyoshi

3.5, rounded up to 4. I'm gonna need to read these books again at another time, because my mind was just somewhere else while I was reading this, and I wasn't fully focused on it. But I know I did appreciate the writing, I loved Kyoshi as a character and her found family with Rangi and their friends, and I love the established lore of the world of Avatar. As for the actual story, that's what I need to read it again for so I can give it the proper focus it deserves. As it stands I felt like I was expecting a little bit more from this book, and I feel like I wanted a little more overall from the series, but my mind is still a little distracted, so I can't find the words to accurately describe my feelings. This was great, though, in the sense that it's a fantastic deeper look into the world for any huge fans of the Avatar: The Last Airbender show.

Again just really loved what these books added to the world of Avatar and these feel right at home with the TV series.

was poised to write a glowing review about how much i enjoyed watching Kyoshi grow into her Avatar-hood but am momentarily distracted/disgruntled by having googled 'will there be a third kyoshi book' and not seeing any "yes, confirmed, for sure" results?! the first book was a slow start for me but i'm very invested now, and i hope this isn't the last Avatar novel F.C. Yee gives us.

Very good book, there's a lot of action and not really a dull moment - it's shorter than the book before it but I think that's to its benefit, as it's pretty laser-focused on a particular thing and doesn't wear out its welcome. Nice fire nation cultural lore in this as well! Really enjoyed this as the follow-up to the necessarily slower Rise of Kyoshi.

Picking up right where the first one left off it was a very well done continuation of the storyline. This was more of Kyoshi being the Avatar as represented in her limited appearance in the show.

It was also leaves open the ability for more Kyoshi stories to be released, which I certainly hope they are.

I did not expect the YA Avatar novels to have such a downer ending. But in a good way! I love it when a book makes me feel for the ostensible antagonists, so when the clash with the protagonists comes, it's heartbreaking.

Learning more about a world and universe I fell in love with when I was a kid has been so much fun.

This follow up in Kyoshi's story did not disappoint. This time round, Kyoshi finds herself trying to establish what type of Avatar she wants to be, while trying to understand her past lives and dealing with the pressure that brings. She is also trying to create and maintain peace, justice and balance across the Four Nations.

Overall I'm giving this book 4/5 ⭐️. Please go read it, you won't be disappointed.
