Honestly still a fun, quick read but essentially a filler episode with a convoluted plot and odd character development choices. I do not understand the romance that happened here it did not make sense at all!!! Grayson...my son deserved so much better :(
I enjoyed this, but nowhere near as much as [b:The Inheritance Games|53063341|The Inheritance Games (The Inheritance Games, #1)|Jennifer Lynn Barnes|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1593805436l/53063341._SY75_.jpg|71767646]. A lot of the drama here felt forced (especially that love triangle!) and while I was intrigued to learn what had happened to Toby Hawthorne, some of the revelations just fell flat.
The writing still captivated me enough that I'm keen to read [b:The Final Gambit|58658940|The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, #3)|Jennifer Lynn Barnes|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1634068536l/58658940._SY75_.jpg|93463166], but I had hoped to like this one more.
Re-read in SEPT 2022 because I couldn't remember anything that happened!

It's still just fine - I like the riddle that is the grandfather and whatever the main plot point of the books are. The puzzles are fun and it's nicely paced and interesting. The characters are still boring and without dimension.
Makes me wonder if I actually liked the first book.
This series has genuinely taken me by surprise it has been a while since I’ve been hooked into books. But this series makes me long for escapes all over again and that is what it has given me. I speed ran this book (though I am a quick reader regardless) and sitting here I’m tempted to start reading the third book even though I know it’s late. But this series is amazing. It’s a twist of mystery and romance all into one I’m not a fan of romance typically but this book might make me want to start reading that genre.
There is no words really to say for me to explain the reason to read this book aside from one perfect line , that it is a “very risky gamble”
