This book is a great representation of black lives in rural white areas. It talks about racial difference and sisterhood in the most beautiful way ever. A diverse cast of characters including a trans character makes this all the more enjoyable. It is a must read to empathize with the minority community.particledamage's review against another edition

But once the story got truly going, pushing past character introductions and scene setting, an amazing story blossomed. This book is stuffed to the brim with a compelling cast and stories that you don't always encounter. It knows exactly what it wants to be and it takes you along with it, eager to travel through time and history.
I've been in a reading rut for ages but this story brought me back.
So, if there's anyone out there who maybe feels discouraged by Part 1, keep going, it's well worth it.

This story tackles race, gender and childhood trauma. We watch the twins’ lives transform before our eyes.
My only con of the book is that the timeline at times confuse me.

And I enjoyed both of them, a lot. I'm not sure why I'm giving four stars, not five - I kept thinking about this book whenever I had to pause reading for a bit. But I did get bored sometimes, too. Or maybe annoyed - Stella and Kennedy are pretty hard to deal with sometimes.
Moderate: Domestic abuse, Racism, and Dementia
Minor: Sexism
