This was quite the read - a bleak but humorous slice of life. My family is all mennos too, so I feel very connected in that way, and I do appreciate that! I'm trans also, but my experience is radically different than that of binary trans women. I wish we had learned much more about Wendy's grandpa, I feel like that got a bit lost? Maybe that was intentional though, we certainly don't always get the answers we seek! All in all, a very good book.

I didn't love this book.  But it's an important story and it definitely had an impact.
I guess the biggest thing it did was make me challenge some of my preconceptions, but it also made me wonder about whether this was the experience of many, or just a few.  The characters were real, flawed and their stories were sad, hopeful and challenging.
Worth reading when you want something gritty, real, and hopeful despite all of the sh!t.

Overall a good book. I did think that the middle was a bit too slow without much progression for a decent portion of it, but this book is still well written and effectively discusses the difficulties of being transgender in modern society.

On one hand, this book was a litany of difficult things that happen to trans women, all squashed into a 2 month timeline. It was exhausting.

On the other hand, the relationships between the women in this book were so wonderful. Supporting each other when they were up and commiserating when they were down. I loved those relationships, even if they were a little enabling.

Ending was great because it was so anticlimactic.

I really enjoyed this book. It definitely is pretty sad in places, but the characters are all pretty sympathetic and the narrative is winding and circular in a way I enjoy. It feels more true than stories that start one place and end somewhere else with everything wrapped up.

That said? I did a little bit wish that Wendy had made some more decisions abt her life in the end. I wanted her to do something more to protect herself, whether that was getting more of a handle on her alcohol use, or deciding to be firmer abt her boundaries w all her terrible male acquaintances? And maybe that's a little too pat for this story, but I am still worried abt her!

I really like how strong and realistic her support system is. I like the way they disagree but also are still there for each other? I feel very conflicted about her relationship with her dad? A lot of it was very good but also a lot of the time it seemed like he wanted to fuck her?? Which extremely threw me off? I don't know.

I would like? To read a book abt trans people just existing in the world w out being miserable + fucked up abt it, but I understand that this is not that book! So. Maybe next time.
