3.5 stars – Although Will and Emory are for sure my FAVORITE COUPLE, this is perhaps my lowest rated P. Douglas book. I'll explain my reasoning below.
The parts of the book that take place in the past are BY FAR my favorite chapters that P. Douglas has ever written. I loved reading how in love Will was with Emory and seeing him pursue her was *chef’s kiss*. Although Em's past completely broke my heart, all of this was beautifully written. It is in these chapters that the love story between these two characters thrives; it really tugs on your heartstrings. If more of the book had this overall feel, this would have been an easy 5-star read for me.
However, the Present Day chapters fell flat for me. I didn't really like the Blackchurch setting and the big reveal about why Will was even there was very underwhelming. Also, I really didn't care about the new Blackchurch characters we were introduced to and they TOOK UP SO MUCH TIME (which made the book unnecessarily long).
Now onto my BIGGEST ISSUE with this book – Alex. In the previous books I had no problem with Alex (in fact, I quite liked her). But, her presence in this book really p!ssed me off. Why? (see spoilers below):
My last big issue with this book (I like to pretend it didn’t happen at all) – the TRAIN SCENE. Just, WHY? That was so unnecessary and felt like it came out of nowhere. I’ve read a lot of romances with some of the crazies, raciest, darkest tropes so it’s not like I hate that kind of thing. It just felt like it didn’t fit with this couple. Honestly, it hasn’t worked for me at all throughout this series (If I’m not mistaken, I think P. Douglas has included this kind of situation in all other books in this series. And none of them have worked for me).
Therefore, although Will/Em have my whole heart, this book simply does not. I would LOVE a short story (or novella) on just Will/Em because the Present Day chapters in this book did not do them justice.

Why did we spend so much time talking about Alex in this book? I HATED that Will kept telling Emory about his MANY sexcapades and basically kept throwing his and Alex’s deep connection in Emory’s face. Reading that made me want to barf and took away from the Will/Em love story. Also, after hearing all of that, HOW can Emory be so friendly with Alex? I wouldn't want that constant reminder near me. I really wish P. Douglas had kept Alex/Will as platonic besties and not friend-with-benefits. If he had to be a manwhore, couldn’t it be with randos? Did it really have to be with someone who would likely be a part of his and Em’s life forever? UGH. Last comment on the whole Alex situation - why did P. Douglas write so much on Alex/Aydin? We again wasted soooo much time on those two, thus we didn't really get many Will/Em moments in the present timeline. This INFURIATED ME because this was the book I was most excited for. Alex/Aydin should have just had their own novella and only a minor part of this book.My last big issue with this book (I like to pretend it didn’t happen at all) – the TRAIN SCENE. Just, WHY? I've finally finished the Devil's Night series, took me two weeks which is quite fast for me considering how much work I've been having of as late. I blame it on Penelope and her keeping me on my toes at every corner.
Nightfall falls second in my fav out of the series just because I really love Banks, otherwise, this would be my first. I love love love Will, I knew when he was introduced in Corrupted.
I'm happy and sad that I finished it. I think it might be a series I will go back to some time definitely.
And the ending... I AM SO READY FOR ATHOS STORY AND ESLEM!!!!!
