there were lots of buts of writing i enjoyed, but overall i found the pace too slow and the book too long for me; i ended up growing a bit impatient with it in the last 100-200 pages. I did really like the way it was organized tho, that was cool.

A one-star novel wrapped in a four-to-five star philosophy textbook. (Or does the novel wrap the philosophy textbook?) This may have blown my mind as a younger lad, but Hesse's lessons and questions here feel familiar to, and already absorbed by, this middle-ager.
Couldn’t make it past 3/4 of the book - really wanted to love it like the rest of Hesse’s masterpieces, but I found the writing (or at least the Eng translation) way too long-winded and dull. Also overly intellectual, and character development/focus wasn’t a major theme in this one compared to Hesse’s other works, so it felt very impersonal.
Ich bin froh, dass dieses Buc nicht mein erster Hesse war. Hesse hat einen tollen Schreibstil und er hat super zu diesem Buch gepasst, aber leider musste ich mich zu oft dazu zwingen weiterzulesen und es hat sich sehr gezogen.
