beautiful story about history, memory, and generational trauma. i wasn't taught about japanese-interment camps until my senior year of high school; the only reason i knew of their existence was because of family stories about jewish relatives who had just fled nazi germany and settled on the west coast, who were horrified by seeing the camps. telling stories within your family and communicating your history to each other is sometimes the only way we can learn the truth of the world.

i learned so much from this book!

This book has such an important story. I loved the way it was structured and weaved from the past back to the present. I learned things I didn’t know and also really enjoyed the art.

The graphic novel telling really paints the picture, literally, of the story. It’s a beautiful and painful story of the author’s family experience - a mix of fact and fiction, because so little of the truth is known and folks didn’t talk about that. A good reminder as we head into another election; no one is safe from racism and “othering” and incarceration.

This was a wonderful book about a girl traveling back through time to learn about her grandmother and other's experiences in the internment camps. I think this is a wonderful book to teach children about what Japanese Americans had to face during WWII.

This is a beautiful narrative portraying the lives and conflicts of Japanese American internment camps, an American atrocity that is often brushed away as war collateral.
I wasn’t sure how much I was going to enjoy this book, but it blew me away. The art is beautiful, the pacing is fantastic, and the characters are so well written.
I think that learning and growth can be facilitated so effectively through fiction, and this gorgeous work is a fantastic example of fiction that can teach by portraying the human experience. Also there’s some queerness, which always wins me over.
