wow. this really floored me, and i’m so happy i read it. this is a beautiful graphic novel that is great mix of fact and fiction. kiku hughes pulls in from her own life story to make a whimsical prose for the sake of educating her audience on japanese internment camps as well as other hardships through the decades since that have plagued the japanese community.

while i've learned about the camps through school, i think the most eye opening thing was the discussion on how they were treated after. and even how they’ve tried to show solidarity for other minorities so these horrors will not be repeated. also, the point of how asian americans were used during the civil rights movement to push anti-black agendas was something i had never even thought of.

while this novel touches on the time period of trump’s presidency and the horrible displacements happening at the mexico borders, my stomach turns at the fact that this can sadly still be applied to many things happening in today’s world - especially in palestine.

my take away is that kiku is right - a piece of dialogue from this books says “THEY CAN'T DENY IT HAPPENED, BUT THEY CAN HIDE THE FACTS AND CLAIM THEY WERE ONLY ACTING OUT OF DUTY” and touches on how community and solidarity can combat the erasure of such horror. we should always keep fighting to make sure voices are heard and helped.

The drawings were gorgeous and I felt they really were able to display the emotion of the times.

After reading this, I ended up doing personal research on the Japanese camps, as I've never really been educated much on them.

What a wonderful graphic novel! The writer clearly spent lots of time researching Japanese Incarceration. I appreciated their specificity and commentary about the period was beautifully done. Definitely recommend to anyone! Once again, these stories are so necessary and important to talk about! Thank you, Kiku Hughes, from one hapa to another! 😊💞
