I cannot express truly how impactful this story was to read. Kiku was able to weave this beautiful story about how no matter how much we try to bury the past, it will always come back to haunt us. It shows how impactful generational trauma is, even to those who do not grow up actively hearing about said traumatizing event(s). It also shows how true the phrase "if we do not learn from the past, history is doomed to repeat itself" is. This book drew parallels to the events happening surrounding the discrimination of families being separated at the boarder, and muslims being denied entry into the US. The entire time I was reading this I kept thinking about what is currently going on in Palestine, and how these same arguments and rationals are being used as a justification for genocide. It is important to discuss our past to prevent us from continuing to cause these same traumas to communities who just want to live the same way we do.
