From Judy:
Although he is now retired Armand Gamache continues to find puzzles and mysteries to solve. Penny sets this book firmly in Three Pines and I felt that I was getting to know the inhabitants even better. The characters are as compelling as ever. *****
From Saffron:
Iwas thrilled to see that there was new Gamache book and that his retirement does not mean the end of the series. *****

Cried at the ending!!! Not my favorite of hers but the ending made the whole book for me!!
I wondered what was next after the last book, which essentially wraps up the series. Essentially this one was written to kill off a character who had already been written off.
This feels like some of the earlier novels in the series, where the mystery is tangential to a character study of the main characters-here, a lot of time spent observing Gamache recovering & moving into semi-forced retirement.
The mystery here seemed accidental & I had a hard time following the connections and clues that led the characters through the plot, which made me appreciate this less than previous installments in the series.

This is my least favorite of the series so far. It’s still thoughtful and atmospheric but the actual murder mystery part seemed thrown in and cobbled together and totally implausible. There was also a lot of unnecessary foreshadowing that felt forced. I wish she had just stuck with the search for Peter without the rest of it.
