I don't know where to start with my feelings about The Long Way Home. I love this series, but this was not one of my favorite installments. Even though it's a mystery, it's more interested in character than plot, in thoughts and feelings than actions, which has been true of all Penny's books; it's what makes them stand out. It also makes it a series best read from the beginning, to know the characters, to learn their stories, the things that are important to them, how they interact with each other. However, it can also make it slow, a bit plodding. It's also not a typical mystery in that it doesn't start with a crime, it starts as the search. There are eventually crimes uncovered, and there is a murder, but not til late in the story. I don't think that's really a spoiler: there's always a murder in her mysteries.
It's a good book. I had to admit it had me crying at the end, even if it was a bit cheesy. Sometimes cheesy works.
I felt like the mystery, was wrapped up a little quickly at the end. Slow revelation is one of Penny's strengths and the rushed ending didn't do her characters justice.
I truly enjoyed the book and can't wait for the next in the series. I just don't think it was quite as strong as some of the others in the series. Maybe that makes sense though; the urgency that Gamache had in previous books is resolved. He's healing and maybe the overall slower pace of this one provides a kind of respite.

This was not my favorite Gamache book but I loved it still the same. These books, oddly enough, are becoming my favorite comfort reads.
With "The Long Way Home" Louis Penny takes the recently retired Armand Gamache on the road in search of Peter Morrow... and to find a way to enable his neighbor Clara Morrow "to make the wounded whole." Along with his former second-in-command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, and another friend, Myrna Landers, they journey deeper and deeper into Québec in search of Clara's estranged husband, Peter. Never an especially likeable character in the Three Pines oeuvre -- in fact, clearly unlikeable in many ways -- ins some ways this is a redemption story for both Peter and Clara.
Good, but in the scheme of this series not my favorite...
I'm surprised that I keep up with this series, but the writing and characters are great.
My stars are for her beautiful writing and the character who dies who was my least favorite.
I'm afraid she is going the Martha Grimes, Elizabeth George route, and writing novels instead of mysteries.
3.5 There were parts that were beautiful, but overall didn't feel as engaged as with previous books.
Can I give more than 5 stars?
This book is amazing. I've been reading straight through Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache books since I borrowed the first one from the library in August. I bought the second one, knowing that it was one of those books that I'd want to re-read even before I read it. Now it's February, 6 months later, and I've bought every succeeding book, and I've just finished "The Long Way Home". The books, the characters, the meaning, all evolve and deepen as the series goes on. Reading Louise Penny is a wonderful experience; I find myself savouring and lingering over each paragraph, although I often skim through books, especially descriptive passages. With the last few books, I've been thinking, "This is the best one yet!" and then after I finish the one after that, I think it again. So that's my reaction: "This is the best one yet." I've already bought the next one and I'm going to start reading it today.
