Just sobbing at the ending of this one. Another ending I couldn't have predicted and amazing insight into the growth and destruction of humans.

I enjoyed the plot along the way, but found the ending gratuitously sad

After reading the previous installment of this series [b:How the Light Gets in|18604234|How the Light Gets in|Louise Penny|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1381722738s/18604234.jpg|23594240], I was curious to find out where it would go when I found out a new Gamache book was forthcoming. I was not disappointed by this one and am now looking forward to the next one that is in the works. As with other books in this series, art plays a pivotal role in the plot. I look forward to learning more about some of the Canadian artists whose work I was not familiar with, such as Clarence Gagnon whose painting "Evening on the North Shore" is beautifully used as the book jacket. Fans of the series will learn additional details of some of the characters' backstories, with the story centering around Three Pines villager Clara Morrow (who is one of my favorites) and her husband, Peter, who has failed to return home following their one-year separation. While Clara remains unsure as to whether she will take Peter back, she knows she must do whatever she can to find him. Puzzling clues trickle in from around the globe and lead the villagers deeper into Québec as they race to find their missing friend. The book's atmosphere is thick with the tension caused by the actions a troubled, sin-sick soul. Another stellar contribution to this wonderful series.

Former Chief Inspector of Homicide in the Sûreté du Québec Armand Gamache has “retired” to take up residence in Three Pines. Clara Morrow asks him to help find her husband, Peter, who has failed to make a promised rendezvous on the anniversary of their separation. Gamache calls upon his former second in command, Jean Guy Beauvoir, to help him with official aspects of the search for a man most people don’t consider missing

This is the tenth book in the Three Pines Series.  Penny continues to develop the characters who populate the village of Three Pines. Each book adds a new dimension to the story. In this entry, the Gamaches have relocated to Three Pines which has become almost a mystical place for Armand. He has become a true villager to the eccentric residents. The journey Gamache and Beauvoir  take to look for Peter reveals more of their history and relationship. Although they suspect that Peter has either chosen not to return or is no longer able to return, they follow his trail during his year away.

I am reading through Penny’s Gamache series and have enjoyed each of them. They have gotten better and better with each one. This one was better than those before. The themes of the series including Gamache’s continued clashes with his superiors are enhanced by other short term ones including relationships within the Art community and the pet duck add new elements to all. I heard the hosts of Currently Reading who are doing a deep dive in this series remarked on the Easter eggs through some themes, characters and other elements that continue to appear such as the silent monks who appear in this book as wedding music for Jean Guy Beauvoir and Gamache’s daughter, Annie. I enjoy these little nuggets and am looking forward to the next book. Recommend to readers of mystery-thrillers, crime, detective procedures, murder and Canada in this adult fiction offering.

The murder in this book was a little too far fetched for me. I am going to take a little break from Three Pines for awhile. I don’t think I enjoy it when Clara is in charge. It felt like the book wandered around like she does. While I can appreciate artistic people, I prefer the linear thinking of more logic driven characters.
