The Long Way Home

Louise Penny

3.9 AVERAGE

An a(muse)ing tale for much of the book, but then it storms its way to a dramatic ending.

I struggled with this story probably because I find the characters it revolves around, Peter and Clara Morrow, hard to enjoy. I appreciate that Penny tries make each story in this series stand alone while also tying to the series. This story though seemed a bit forced, hard to follow, and unsatisfying. Again, I think much of this comes from my general annoyance at Clara’s behavior as it relates to Peter and I found this attempt at his redemption weak.

I genuinely love this series and have loved to see how the stories and writing have evolved over time. While I struggled through this story, overall the series and stories are wonderful reads that show a clear amount of thought, detail, and care in each.

4 stars for a welcome addition to the Armand Gamache series by Louise Penny. I read this library book in 3 days. it is a page turner. I have read the previous 9 books in the series and it helps if you read them in order, as there are continuing plot lines.
This book has Clara Morrow asking Armand for help in finding her husband Peter. She asked him to leave over 1 year ago, because he had grown increasingly jealous of her success as an artist. She told him to come back in exactly 1 year, and they could possibly reconcile. But the 1 year anniversary date has gone by with no Peter. She is worried that something may have happened to Peter. Armand is now retired from the Surete(police), but agrees to investigate.
My wife read this book before me and said "it is a really good book. It is very emotional." The ending is emotional for Clara.
In previous books, there was not a great deal of humor, but this one has some laugh out loud lines.
Definition of Ruth Zardo FINE:
"Ruth had called her latest slim volume of poetry I'm FINE. Only people who read it realized that FINE stood for Fucked up, Insecure, Neurotic and Egotistical."

3.5 ⭐️

While I did enjoy this book it was not my favorite Louise Penny. As some people who have read this book commented the " look at the painting , look at the painting again" sections did get a little tedious. However, overall an enjoyable read. It was great to get to see the gang again!
I can't wait for the latest one in August!

Disappointing. No focus, which is a shame because I love this series.

The ending was really unsatisfying.
Spoiler there was no reason for Peter to die other than shock factor. So readers gain nothing from his death other than shock and pointlessness.

A bit slow in the middle, but such an interesting exploration of the characters of Three Pines. Really love how Penny crafts these flawed, but beloved people

This book was ok. Minor spoilers ahead.

The whole series is getting a bit absurd. Tiny little perfect village where 1 in 4 people is murdered. It’s reminding me of Grey’s Anatomy. Apparently living in Three Pines is the literary equivalent of working at the hospital in Grey’s with the ever changing name. Oof. I think I will take a bit of a break from this series for a bit.

Still well written like most of Penny's books and not a bad book, but disappointing compared to the rest of them.
