The ending hit me hard and I'll be recovering from it for awhile.

While there's no crime to start us in this book, there's still a lot going with the characters. This is one of the few books in the series that were more of an exploration of the characters and less of a mystery. It still has the charm that Louise Penny manages to incorporate in each of her novels.

Audible version: I hated this book, but at the same time, I recognize there were some good bits. But god, how BORING! I didn't care about Peter and where he was. And I didn't like how Clara was portrayed here. And there wasn't enough about Gamache or Beauvoir to make it worth listening to. If one is separated from a husband and he doesn't show up on the day you agreed to meet, you move on FFS.

Another good installment

I felt like the first half of this one dragged for me. But once the search got underway in earnest it took on the urgency and flow I am accustomed to with Penny.

Just generally mediocre. The mystery plot doesn’t get interesting for forever. Feels like a transition book, like Penny wanted to hurry up and resolve one character arc so she could get to the actually interesting stuff she has in mind. News flash, Pen, you don’t need to write a book full of uninteresting stuff so you can write an interesting one. Hoping the next one is better.
