The Damned

This was a little bit of a step down from the first one. The behavior of the characters seemed to strain their earlier presentations, acting a lot more childish.

Arjun pitching a hissy in front of his queen, considering how much composure he impressed upon Bastian, seemed way off the mark.

I love the idea that Vampires and Werewolves are from the winter court, and the uses of iron and silver. However, fae throwing around the words “Thank you”? That cringe also took me straight out of the book.

I also feel like Celine is now tragically on the Mary-Sue track, which is disappointing since she was such a strong woman who didn’t need fae blood.

The first book picks up where the last ended with Bastien realising he’s an immortal and Celine’s memories are gone. Bastien has decided to respect her wishes and keep his distance.

In this book Bastien really struggles with his identity as a new immortal and is ultimately trying to find a way back to his humanity. Celine knows that there is something missing and while she tries to throw herself into her new life something is missing

This book was ok. I enjoyed the building of the world in this book and there was more exploration into the fantasy element as well as the history of the races. Overall was happy to see them come back together but devastated by Oddette’s demise.

gotta be honest I thought this was going to be a duology but I’m quite happy to read more about celine and bastien in the future.

I did really enjoy this book, I loved that more “fantasy”-characters come into play in this book and that the vampire aspect is truly finally explored. I also really enjoyed that the rivalry between the court of lions and the brotherhood was put more to the forefront.
However, I did feel like a lot of the story was just the book dumping information on me without any rhyme or reason as to why it was important at that time. Sometimes it felt like this book was just meant to set up the next book as, in my opinion at least, there was hardly anything truly happening. Even the “conflicts” between and within the characters seemed to be solved way to quickly and easily, which was super disappointing.

Despite all this ‘the damned’ was an incredible read. Renee Ahdieh’s writing is phenomenal and the atmosphere that the book created was absolutely perfect for this novel, it was chilling and mysterious and oh-so-sexy.

3/5⭐

“I have loved you in both my lives, I will love you in the rest to come.”

Renée will forever have a chokehold on me.

We didn't get enough Celine scenes. I get it it's the damned which revolves around Sebastian, but still would've loved to see more of my girl.
Renee deciding to give the court of lions their own pov's in this book was an intriguing choice, one I appreciated a lot. Jae and Odette's POV's were everything I could wish for.

I have to knock down a star because the constant inner monologues continued for the duration of the book were quite annoying and not acceptable. At times there were more inner talking than action or even a dialogue and I think that's one of the disadvantages and weaknesses of this book.

Sebastian needing some tough love throughout the whole book.

This book had no business to entice such feelings in me.
