Wow, this book picked up right at the end of book one and I love reading them back to back. I really enjoyed the various POV's this one had. I thought it was so interesting to hear more of Bastien as well as other important characters. The betrayals and amount of action was so so good. I loved the new characters and new worlds that were introduced. It didn't hit the sequel slump at all and I am on the edge of my seat for book three!
I loved this one so much more than the first one. What a wild unexpected ride.
Are you angry you were not permitted to die on your own terms? Who among us is granted such a bounty?
I LOVED how much the world expanded in this book and the many threads of the plot that were set into motion for future installments.
I also enjoyed so many of the character's stories that Ahdieh made sure to flesh out. Jae's, Odette's, and Arjun's especially. And you can really see Bastien's struggles with morality and navigating his new life.
The ending did feel a little rushed but I think it's because we had more switching character perspectives near the end (but they were important to show), and this book had a slow burn plot-wise for most of it. At first I felt like I actually understood the villain's sense of revenge but then
Looking forward to the next book. I hope we get much more of Arjun's story I feel like this is Ahdieh's strongest series so far that I've read.

Spoiler
Odette died and I WAS LIKE NOOOOO. Also Celine's crime catching up to her happened very quickly.Looking forward to the next book. I hope we get much more of Arjun's story
Spoiler
since from the way it ended with Pippa's perspective it seems like we will.
I loved the first book in this series and I really wanted to give this one 5 stars like the first but I just couldn’t. Don’t get me wrong the book is great, but I felt like this one drug on in some spots for some reason. I felt like I kept waiting for the exciting parts a lot. I can’t wait to read the next for sure now!
sooo this was rather disappointing. here’s why i was disappointed:
•there are like 10 new POVs. i love celine and book 1 was all her. we didn’t even see her in this book until page 99
•everyone’s POV was written in third person except for Bastien’s. i wasn’t a fan of all the switching.
•i didn’t like the pacing. this book basically introduces a whole new world, so there’s a lot of world building. it just felt very different from the first book.
•bc of this i felt like most of the book was pretty slow and just feeding the reader all this new information.
I did really like the last 100 pages, but i just felt like that was too far into the book for that to happen. regardless, i’ll still read new books in this series because i love Celine (also i became a big arjun fan while reading this book) and maybe this book just struggled with middle book syndrome.
