Jungles and magic and monsters and adventure! What else could you want?
Beasts of Prey is a new young adult fantasy series with a basis in African lore, which is on the rise in YA fantasy. I will say this....I went into this book with fairly low expectations for my personal enjoyment. I am not a big fantasy fan, and I am definitely not a big young adult fantasy fan. However, I do read some since I know it's such a popular genre in my library. I can talk and talk and walk the walk with students. It's just not something I seek out. That being said, I enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would. It took one particular twist that I really enjoyed, and I liked all of the characters. Will I be seeking out the next one? I doubt it. However, I will highly recommend it to students in my library and others looking for a good fantasy.

Talk about a cliffhanger... interesting world, gruesome creatures, plenty of reasons to cheer for Ekon and Koffi, and I enjoyed the way the two stories finally came together to reveal the true nature of the monster.
"Sometimes things that seem dangerous are just misunderstood."
A very beautiful and imaginative world where magic is believed to be long gone from Lkossa. Koffi, an indentured servant to the Night Zoo, and Ekton, a candidate to be come a warrior with Sons of the Six, strike a deal to go after the creature, the Shetani. Each having their own reasons for going after it.
I really enjoyed the character development. They have many layers to them that get peeled away as they get to know each other. Their replationship started off untrusting, but they learn to rely on each other to survive the jungle. Their adventure is harrowing, coming across various creatures and plantlife that are made of nightmares. The imagination from the author to come up with the setting and jungle life is so terrifying and I love it. I highly recommend this book. I promise you will not be disappointed!

i was so engaged the whole time never wanted to put the book down will continue the series.
This book started out very prose heavy with dense dialogue and scene setting. But. If one can persevere through that, this story is magnificent.
The descriptions of the land, it’s clothing, the culture was so rich and vibrant, it leapt off the page with such beautiful coloring and scenery…I cannot help but marvel at Ms. Gray’s work.
The mysticism and legendary inspiration is so clearly seen here…I cannot wait for the sequel.
