This book started out very prose heavy with dense dialogue and scene setting. But. If one can persevere through that, this story is magnificent.
The descriptions of the land, it’s clothing, the culture was so rich and vibrant, it leapt off the page with such beautiful coloring and scenery…I cannot help but marvel at Ms. Gray’s work.
The mysticism and legendary inspiration is so clearly seen here…I cannot wait for the sequel.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for gifting me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Receiving these materials in no way impacted my review.

This was such a great read! Like...MAGIC NIGHT ZOO cmon. There are some serious magical vibes throughout this book that I loved, as well as relationships, such as Koffi and Ekon, that I lived for! The POVs were slightly confusing due to the formatting of the eARC, but that something I'm sure will be fixed for printing!

I have so many wonderful things to say about this book but I'll focus on just a few main points.

1. I loved that Gray included neurodivergence in one of her main characters. As a parent of a neurodivergent SE Asian child whose diagnosis was hidden for so much of his life, I really appreciated that it was just a part of him, something that should be accepted just as others parts should. I wish this was a lesson that I, as a parent, had imparted on my child from an early age rather than allow societal norms to dictate what was "normal."

2. Tropes like the chosen one, enemies to lovers, the epic quest, and the corrupt authority figure have been used time and time again, but in BOP, Gray examines how these tropes change when the protagonists aren’t privileged, idealized, or white.

3. Finally, I really appreciated Gray's attentiveness to the circus culture, how animals and people, are used, abused, and mistreated for the entertainment of the privileged few.

Beasts of Prey was one of my most anticipated reads of 2021, and it fully exceeded my expectations! I loved reading this book, the world Ayana built was so interesting and well-developed. I loved the characters who each have their own personal traumas that they struggle with throughout the book in a way that feels realistic and interesting and makes them someone you want to root for. The action, the mythology, the reveals, all of them were so interesting. Definitely one of my favorite reads of the year.
