Magical creatures, magic, warriors and an epic fantasy to get stuck into? Recipe for a perfect book! It really was great from the get go and I loved the steady world building that the author introduced us to. Sometimes I can find a fantasy world a bit overwhelming when you’re trying to get to grips with what everything means and the minutiae of the universe it’s set in, but the author got it so right with this one. I loved the universe in Beasts of Prey and it was great fo get to know as you went along.
The plot was ace and one that was really easy to sink into. It was so vivid and well written and I loved disappearing into the depths of this book for some escapism.
It was very fast paced and there was always something going on or building up to something to keep you intrigued. It was so entertaining and I honestly couldn’t put it down! It was such a wrench trying to test myself away from it.
The characters were great too and the split perspectives from the different characters was great to read. Its one of those books where you unsure where it’s going to go and you’re on the edge of your seat waiting to find out what happens! It was a wonderful rollercoaster of a read and I absolutely loved it!! Towards the end, I was racing through it as things really picked up the pace and came to a crescendo. I didn’t foresee the bombshells or plot twists and turns and wow, after that ending I need more!
Thank you to the authors and publishers via NetGalley for this book in return for my honest thoughts and review.

Koffi and her mom are indentured servants at the Night Zoo. Ekon aspires to be a Son of Six. One fateful night, the two meet. They begin a journey into the Greater Jungle to hunt the Shetani who has been killing people.
NC HBOB selection 2022-2023
This was really pretty good. I enjoyed the shifting back and forth between different perspectives. Gray did a good job of keeping surprises well hidden.

I'll be honest, this book didn't hook me. If I had not been listening to it on audiobook I wouldn't have finished.
But I don't think this reflects on the book, I think that might just be me. By the end I wanted to know the outcome and of course we're left on a cliffhanger. So when the next one comes out I will read it, and hopefully I'll be in the right brain space for it.

Such a fun action packed YA fantasy book! A great start to the series! I loved the fierce characters and the magic system was amazing! Can't wait to start the next book!!
This was a pretty solid YA series opener! I liked the characters and enjoyed the split POVs which can sometimes get a bit tedious in series, but this utilised it well. The dynamic between the MCs was organic in that I was glad they were friends instead of being rushed into a romance. The fantasy aspect was thoughtfully crafted, as was the worldbuilding and I really liked the mixing pot of aspects of African folklore and mythology. Pretty good YA read for sure
I enjoyed the author's writing style and the character development. I was disappointed in Ekon's character. Peer pressure and am unhealthy need for the approval of others caused him to betray himself and others. Koffi"s journey of self realization was beautiful.
Wow this book was fantastic! I love the world building and the characters! I cannot wait to read the next book!
Excellent afro-fantasy novel, and I wish that young me was exposed to this early on. Very intriguing world building and excited to see how the second book comes out!
It feels a little too much like every single YA I've ever read to earn the full 5-star rating, but the setting is original and Gray does an excellent job of amping up the drama and mystery.
Had this checked out on libby and kept reaching for it last. My loan period is almost up, people have holds on it and it's just not catching my attention. Time to return it so someone else can enjoy it
