"The Catcher in the Rye is a great American classic" is the biggest lie ever told in literature. The book is overrated and boring and Holden Caulfield is whiny and miserable. If I wanted to read a couple hundred pages of a rich white kid complaining and blaming all of his problems on everyone else, I could browse reddit.
I'm convinced that no one actually enjoys this book, and everyone only reads it because you're "supposed to" or they had to for a high school English class. Then they pretend to like it because you're not allowed to dislike such a Classic. People who like it probably identify with Holden in some way, and those are people I don't want to associate with.

2 1/2 Stars. Personally, I really didn't enjoy this book. I mean, it wasn't what I'd call a bad book; however, it wasn't a good book either. I don't know if it was the lack of plot or just the fact that Holden's personality annoyed me at certain times, but I really wasn't as moved by this book as I had hoped I'd be. In its defense, it did provide for a few good psychological musings on personality, fakeness, and prejudice.

i recognize how polarizing this book and holden caulfield are. i personally loved the book and his character. i think it's sad that just like how not many characters give holden grace, not many of the audience give him grace as well. it seems like he's experienced some sort of sexual trauma, and he's also clearly still grieving the loss of his brother. him wanting to the be protector of children, the catcher in the rye, really got to me. everything he says and thinks and does feels like a poor way of navigating through the world as someone who's gone through what he (may have) gone through. i love him!! i think i'll have to reread this eventually to get a better understanding of it but it was really really good.
