I absolutely loved Marissa Meyer’s other series, The Lunar Chronicles, so I gave the first of this series a try and I am afraid I was disappointed. The story read much younger to me than the Lunar Chronicles and I found a number of the teen characters to be moody and obnoxious. Also, there are SO many characters who all have real names and superhero/villain names so keeping track of all the characters and their abilities was quite the task. While the book left off with a big cliffhanger, I don’t think I’ll continue with the series.

The pacing was very slow ( I felt like nothing was happening and I was about half way through the book) and I didn’t have enough motivation to finish reading the book as it had put me in a reading slump. I may revisit in the future when I have the time and energy. Final thoughts as of now are that I am very disappointed because I had heard many great things about this book (also I’m obsessed with her lunar chronicles series) but the story and characters just didn’t click for me like I’m sure it did for many others even though conceptually it is right up my alley.

It took me a while to get into this book, but it's so good! I need the rest of these!

There is a world in which some people have super powers. Those people are called Prodigies. But the normal people, out of fear and jealousy, treat them horribly. A rebel group, the Anarchists, rises to fight against the oppression. The revolution doesn't go as planned. For one, the rebels don't seem to care about the loss of innocent life. The world descends into chaos until a group of prodigies decide to become end the destruction. They bring order, defeat the villains and all is good in the world.

That's where this book starts. Those heroes are the Renegades and they've saved the world. But our protagonist, raised among the Anarchists, hates them. She has her reasons, and she wants to take them down. Then we have Adrian, who is a Renegade. And he's not a bad guy at all. He just wants to make the world a better place like your typical hero.

In fact, the Renegades aren't the bad guys. They have their flaws and you can understand why Nova hates them but their intentions are good and they don't hurt people. The Anarchists definitely do and, from this point, it's easy to pick a side.

But Nova also has a point. She thinks that the Renegades are making humans weak. Normal humans rely so much of the heroes to save them that they don't bother to do anything for themselves. And I'm totally with her on that. But at the same time, her opinions are very biased. Maybe she does want to empower people, but she also wants revenge. For her, the Renegades are always wrong and the Anarchists never seen to be deserving of punishment.

She's a complicated characters and I like that. I kinda like her too. But... I'm not on her side. Technically, I'm not on anyone's side at this point but still. With Nova, it's just that... I like the good guys, okay? I like people who care about others, whose judgement isn't clouded by hatred and who don't contemplate murder on a regular basis. I'm not saying 'don't have gray characters', just that you won't find me singing their praises. Ever.

Anyway, now that we have our very interesting protagonist out-of-the-way, let's move on. First, I love the concept of this book. I've heard many people compare it to The Incredibles, which is pretty accurate, and it gives me Legend vibes. But mostly, I like that it's set after the aftermath of the revolution, after the happy ending. It's like YA is quite literally moving forward. Also, everyone's abilities are really cool. Nova can put people to sleep just by touch, Adrian can draw things to life, and there are other characters with ice powers, invisibility, invincibility, and so many more.

The other characters are really great. Adrian is so nice but he also has a secret. a hidden identity which he uses to fight crime, something that separates him from the cookie-cutter nice guys (though honestly, I don't get why people don't like those). And if I had to pick someone to root for, it'd be him and his friends/team. Because I can trust them to not fuck up the world.

Overall, I loved this book. It's not a short one but so easy to get through because the pace and writing are great. I really enjoyed reading it and I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel. Highly recommend checking it out.

This was so boring. Didn’t care about the characters or the plot. The world was hard to understand and trying to keep people’s name/superhero name straight was getting annoying.

Clever world, well thought out. I didn't expect to get in to this book, much less to like it, but here we are. We know Marissa Meyer can write. We've seen it before. I'm always up for trying a superhero story, so Renegades was naturally on my list.

Nightmare (Nova) lost her family when she was very young. She was raised by her uncle, known to the world as Ace the leader of the Anarchists. When Ace fell on the night the Renegades took the upper hand over the lawless society that surrounded the rise of heroic powers, the rest of the Anarchists took up as Nova's family. Now Nova is 18 and she wants revenge on the man who killed her uncle and let her family die at the hands of a thug back in the bad old days. The day she tries to exact revenge she chokes. But her family has another plan.

Nova infiltrates the Renegades and our second point-of-view character, Adrian, becomes her team leader. Nova and Adrian lived different lives after their parents died the night that the Anarchists fell. They see the Renegades in different ways. This is the story of their team-up.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
This was so good!!! Marissa Meyer doesn't disappoint.
So, starting off with the plot; it was amazing. I may have spoiled myself the ending when I began reading the book, but it was still kind of shocking. I love the superhero vibes and the found family trope. I'll admit that the first part of the story was a bit slow, but it was definitely worth it.
Another thing I really liked was the fact that the superheroes have uncommon powers. I mean, like there's your typical water-controlling hero, or the one who can fly. But there's also so many more incredible abilities I had never read about in a book before. Like, Adrian's power? Amazing. I really appreciate the creative process that must have been put into coming up with all of those new skills.
Now, for the romance. Nova and Adrian's relationship was... interesting. Don't get me wrong, they were super cute, especially in the last parts of the book, like when they're on their "date" at the amusement park. They make a really good couple and they have a great trope. It's just that I would have liked a tiny bit more tension. From Nova's part, particularly.
Finally, the characters. Another AAAAAAAAAAAAA. They were so amazing. Starting off with Adrian. He's such a good mix of shy and daring, just really swoon-worthy. And we like a guy who shows affection. Then we have Nova. She's a great character and I loved her, but she did give me that eek feeling every once in a while, when she pushed Adrian away. Ok, Ingrid. Wow. At the beginning of the book I would have never expected her to end up acting the way she did. That kind of really surprised me. Well, the rest of the Renegade family; Oscar, Ruby, Danna, Max. They were all amazing. And Oscar and Ruby's relationship was SO cute. I love a good friends to lovers who are trying to hide the fact that they like each other.
Just a great action/romance/dystopia/superhero book.
