Longbourn is certainly the best Pride and Prejudice spinoff I have ever read, not that that is saying much. It didn't try to mimic Jane Austen's style, nor mess with her beloved characters too much. It was an engaging story, interesting to visit downstairs in this time period and I also enjoyed learning about the war.
Beautiful and atmospheric. An Anne Helen Petersen rec, so should I expect anything less? What a treat.
If I could, I would give 3 stars to the first half, and 5 to the second. The story takes a long time to build momentum, but when it does, it's quite effective and very moving.

I wanted to appreciate this more than I did. The story has merit and captured those 'back room' servant moments but the whole story didn't hold my interest .. it seemed to digress and there was a lot of the realities of life – mud, manure, menstruation and there was a heaviness surrounding the servants’ lives .. which was possibly the case ... but there must have been some happiness, some high points they enjoyed. Instead, their lives seem to be about the constant slog from one day to the next…
