First line: “I can hear the sound of her crunching up the path.”
I did really enjoy this novel....but I have to say looking back it was really long-winded in places (I.e. the actual whodunnit and how’d it happen) when it could have just cut to the chase....
I really don’t want to give anything away, so I will try to keep this short. Once we finally get to who committed the crime, we get to wondering HOW did the death of the victim actually occur as it is never explicitly stated.
This novel could have been a LOT more succinct in the storytelling...I will be looking out for this author in the future as this book did hold promise for something good...and who knows? Maybe the next book will really knock me off my feet, as it were.

Took me almost a month to read, but it was worthwhile. The multiple perspectives & change between past & present kept it fresh & entertaining. Despite somewhat knowing the secret, it still is captivating enough to keep you engaged. Not a disappointment!
I kept expecting this book to offer mystery and plot twists but was disappointed. It was interesting but really is just a in depth look at how different people are affected the crimes of one man.
Had this on my shelf for a while and it was originally recommended to me by a friend because I liked "Girl on a Train."
I enjoyed the Widow because it presents the story from different character's perspectives. The story keeps the reader guessing and questioning the reality and motives of all the characters. It was really thrilling and kept me engaged until the end!
I didn't realize this was a series and I am def picking up the other books!

I always get extra creeped out when I read books like this because I know that there are actually sick people out there in real life that think and do things like this. And that’s a pretty scary thought, to be so utterly twisted and keep it hidden so well for so long. There were so many twists and turns that I didn’t see coming in this book, it truly kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. Every time I thought I knew something for sure, something came along to make me question it all over again and I love when a thriller can do that. The only thing that stopped it from being 5 stars for me is that I didn’t find any of the characters particularly noteworthy, they didn’t make me feel anything for them and I didn’t connect with them in any way. But I did thoroughly enjoy this book despite that, especially the very last pages. That ending just struck such a chord with me and gave me shivers down my spine it was so perfect!
Listened - liked the narrative with different people telling the different parts of the story. I was a little disappointed at the end, but the story held my interest all the way with the different perspectives and time frames.
I was glued from start to finish. I felt like I was trying to solve the case, and was really invested in seeing what happened. Recommend!
I read The Child last year and I loved it so I had high hopes for The Widow and it definitely did not disappoint. The plot kept the reader guessing as it wasn't predictable and the characters were well developed. I'm not sure whether I feel sorry for Jean though.
Looking forward to reading The Suspect.

I loved this book! I enjoyed the author's use of different character perspectives and that the audio version used a multi-cast to narrate the book. Including one of my favorites, Jayne Entwistle! I look forward to future books by Fiona Barton!
