UGH the ending... like... no surprises, no twists... I kept turning pages so eager to find out what the big secret was and guess what, there is none! I would have given one star except I really felt intrigued for the majority of my reading experience...the ending was such a let down I felt like I wasted my time and wont be reading her again

I really enjoyed this book, even though it took me forever to read because I didn't have much reading time lately. It was a very enjoyable read and I really liked the psychology that went into the main characters. The book definitely kept you wondering what really happened up til the ending, of which I wish there was more!

This was a very readable book, but it wasn't as thrilling as it was made out to be.

I agree with the reviews that say this shouldn't be compared to Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. That being said, I liked it. It reminded me more of Tana French than anything else. Melancholy, well-written characters

I couldn't put this one down. It features an unreliable narrator. Always fun. And it never drags. Highly recommend.

So compelling! Read it in 2 days. I was knot-in-stomach afraid to turn the pages but still somehow couldn’t turn them fast enough. Definitely delivers for Girl on the Train fans (and not in the way that every unreliable narrator is purported to compare to GOTT). for fans of: True Detective Fans(season 1 in particular), Serial podcast, Gone Girl (obviously), The Whites (R.Price), Stieg Larsson (journo + cops angle); Homicide Life in the Street by David Simon(the book; missing kid/obsessed cop).

RATING: 2 or 2.5

This book began very interesting and I was engaged for the first half, but after that point I found myself losing interest in the story and the characters. I got bored and felt like there really wasn’t any suspense or shock to the novel. Overall was an ok , but disappointing read.

Definitely a quick, engaging read. I found the solution to the mystery was less important to me in the end (and at a certain point it became clear what the solution was); it ended up being the characterization that was interesting. The structure of the story was interesting too; I really like non-linear storytelling although sometimes when the dates were really close together it was hard to follow where the chapter fell in the timeline.

I think the comparison to Girl on the Train is probably a little closer than the comparison to Gone Girl. However, the comparisons don't do this book any favors. Just because all three have unreliable narrators doesn't make them comparable. In The Widow, the hints at domestic violence and drug abuse stay fairly subtle and although the central mystery is very important to the characters, I didn't feel it was as important to the reader. I was more interested in who Jean was becoming without Glen and what her life with Glen was really like.

I would still recommend this book if you're looking for a good thriller and your triggers do not include emotional abuse (primarily gaslighting) or young children in peril/kidnapped/presumed dead.

4.5 stars would be better. Hard to put down. Great for a wet weekend. Another first novel by an author. I seem to gravitate to them.
