02/2023 Re-reading: Still my fav standalone ever.

“There was a lot of things about love that you could only learn after you’d faced the real kind. The best kind wasn’t this soft, sweet thing of hearts and picnics. It wasn’t flowery and divine. Real love was gritty. The real kind of love never quit. Someone who loved you would do what’s best for you; they’d stand up for you and sacrifice. Someone who loved you would face any inconvenience willingly. You didn’t know what love was until someone was willing to give up what they loved the most for you. But it was also never letting them make that choice, either.”

“While Louie might be the sun, Josh was the moon and the stars. He was my gravity, my tide, my ride or die. He was more like my little brother than my nephew, and in some ways, we had grown up together. I had loved him from the moment I laid eyes on him. Loved him from the moment I knew he was a spark of life, and I was going to love him every day of my life.”

Dallas is the blueprint yall. All I want is a man to knit me a hat

If ever there was an aptly titled book it's this one.
Wait for it...... and we did. A super slow-burn of 662 pages so magnificently paced, that even though the two MC's don't physically get together until the later part of the book, their relationship grows steadily and beautifully all the way through.

Diana is a feisty 29 year old who has become the guardian of her two young nephews (aged 5 and 10) after the tragic loss of her brother and his wife. She loves hard. She's fearless. O.K, maybe not fearless, but exceedingly brave. Diana is the most amazing character. She would do anything for her boys. She's still herself, with her own friends, career and life, but has taken on the role of protector, carer and role-model without ever once resenting the upheaval and permanent changes it has caused.

The story is all told from Diana's POV and it is fantastic! I thought her internal monologue was hilarious. She is always so conscious of how her actions will influence the boys. She often laments the need to be mature and act like an adult to be a good example for her nephews, when all she really she wants is to punch or pepper spray someone for disrespecting her or someone she loves.

Dallas is 41, retired from the navy, and because of a previous sour relationship he's very cautious of being taken advantage of by women. He and Diana (who moves into the house across the street from him) get off on the wrong foot, mostly due to Dallas' fear of manipulative women. Eventually the two clear up their differences and through coaching Diana's eldest nephew's baseball team Dallas becomes more involved in the little family across the street.

Dallas is pretty much a classic unicorn hero. Perfect in just about every way, so exactly what Diana deserves.

This book contains one descriptive love scene.

5/5★
Trigger warnings: grief ; death of parent ; fire ; near death experience ; addiction ; domestic abuse

Aaaaaand Mariana Zapata stole my heart again. She really is the queen of slow-burn. Clearly, there are NO slower slow-burn than hers. And yet I've been totally intrigued the whole damn book. Every. Single. Six. Hundreds. And seventy. Pages.
Also, Diana and Dallas are gorgeous and I love them. But here my heart has been stolen by Louie. This little kiddo is the sweetest gosh. I fell in love with this little human and his weirdness. Also the end? Gosh, I cried ugly happy tears. It was perfection.

So yeah, Wait for It is an incredible romance about grief, love and family. A beautiful story that will make you cry of sadness AND happiness. Because all the characters in this book are beautifully written, and again, I'd die for Lou to be happy.
Tropes: slow burn ; haters-to-friends-to-lovers ; single mom ; neighbors

love dallas, love every single character

Second read (listen!) 3/19/25

First read 1/13/1/24

Jan 23 2021: 4.5 stars. This was so good. I loved Dallas & Diana’s relationship. But more than anything, I loved Diana’s relationship with her boys and the broader web of relationships throughout this book. I really appreciated the glimpses of Van and Sal from Zapata’s other works too.

The age gap in this is something I would normally find off putting, but they just worked so well. As always with Zapata, the slow burn of their relationship allowed me to fall in love with them as individuals and then appreciate it so much more when they finally got together.

This has the potential to be a full 5-star upon re-read.

Nov 11 2021: 5 stars. Mariana Zapata is very experienced in ripping my heart out of my chest, rearranging it, and stitching me back together.

Oct 2022: Now more like 4 stars…..
