Cute and fun. This was better written than under Locke but Winnipeg is still better. My only complaint with this book is when he blows up in her after she gets drunk at a bar. Like buddy grow up. You could have gone and talked to her and in what world would you let someone you love talk to a sketchy dude like that and not say something and then blame the whole thing on them. Seems immature. Otherwise he’s a great guy.

This is one of Mariana Zapata’s best slow burns. Not only is the relationship that unfolds between the MMC and FMC just absolutely beautiful but you get to watch the kids fall in love with the MMC and vice versa. I loved the focus that was given to the FMC’s relationship with the kids, it truly was beautiful, there’s no other word to describe it. The characters felt very real, I could picture myself feeling the same emotions in the same situations and their relatability was just off the charts. The MMC was almost reluctantly smitten with her by the end and that’s one of my favorite tropes when done correctly. The romance was a perfect slow burn but there’s so much other story going on that you’re intrigued the whole time and there’s never a dull moment to grow bored. The complication of the MMC’s brother almost felt unnecessary, but at the same time it gave the story a little bit more depth and relatability, because life is full of characters we struggle to put up with. I also like the aspect of including the elderly neighbor who toes the line of discrimination, it supports the complicated nature of people and especially the challenges we face to accept others even when they may be hesitant to accept us. I think it shone a light on a truly undiscussed grey area of reality and human nature. This book was layered and fun and heartbreaking and romantic and absolutely everything you could look for in a slow burn, and then more.
