Oh this was so cute and sweet. I've been a huge fan of anthologies and short story collections recently and after a brief few fantasy binge, this is the light hearted read I needed. Filled with a diverse cast of characters, 13 authors compile 13 captivating stories for you to stay Up All Night reading. And I just nearly did!

I think when I first picked it up I was expecting it to be a bunch of stories, slightly related, maybe a reoccurring character or two, all from one night; but the reality of this short story collection felt more authentic, touching, and relatable. Each chapter brought about a new set of characters, a new problem, a new crush, and a new perspective of being in high school. I was brought right back to age 17 while reading these, and, for the most part, I mean the happy memories. Some of these stories are funny, some are sad, some are heavy, and others are romantic. Each author brings a genuine atmosphere of growing up to their story, and all of the challenges we face as we come of age.

I received an ARC of Up All Night from a Goodreads Giveaway (I'm sorry it took me so long to read it šŸ’–)

This rating is particularly subjective: I struggle to truly enjoy short fiction collections. Iā€™m much more of a novel person, because I enjoy getting sucked into a characterā€™s perspective and world.

That being said, this collection was so much fun to read. Most of the stories explore the awkwardness and growing pains of teenage life, and the diversity of characters was really refreshing. I think thereā€™s something for almost every reader in this collection (although many of my students would call this book ā€œgirlyā€).

One of my favorite aspects of this book is how many of the stories explored the complexity of adolescent friendships. Some of the stories were about friendships falling apart, and others were about friendships that were just being formed. While there were some romantic stories, I enjoyed the focus on friendship because itā€™s such an important part of being a teen (and being a human).

This was such a great collection of stories from some of the greats in the modern writing world. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

In this 13 story collection, we get a little bit of everything. We get a great array of thriller, paranormal, queer voices, black voices, family, romance, contemporary. There is something for everyone in these stories.

Out of these 13 stories, my top favs were Never Have I Ever, from Karen M. McManus and Shark Bait from Tiffany D. Jackson.

One of the best things about a book of short stories like this is you can read one or two stories at a time. And you can jump around and read them out of order. I find that liberating in a book. I very rarely get to read short story collections, so this was a major treat.

Thank you to Algonquin Books for my arc in exchange for my honest review.

I typically struggle with short story compilations, but I loved this one! Entertaining stories that didnā€™t leave me hanging.

I enjoyed this collection of stories quite a bit. I absolutely loved stories like Shark Bait and Missing. I skipped Kiss the Boy and When You Bring a Dog to Prom for being too cliche and young for me.

I love the representation in this book though.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was a decent story collection. Some stories were just meh, but I feel like thatā€™s typical when you try to pull together so many stories from different authors on a common theme. Some will shine, and the others seem dull by comparison. Is this a favorite/ most memorable story collection of all the ones Iā€™ve read? Not so much, but itā€™s still likely a decent addition to an upper-secondary classroom or school library.
