I tried and tried to get through this one. Just. Couldn't. Do. It. Not my style I suppose.

2.5. An interesting premise with (some) interesting plot points, but it was all muddled for me in execution. Most of that is a style thing. I struggle with books that revel in their own cleverness, and this one is particularly too cute by half. I absolutely can see why so many love it; it just missed for me.

I'm not sure if it was me or the book, but it kind of fizzled out halfway through. On paper, The Eyre Affair sounds very much like a book I'd enjoy. Lots of references to classic literature, a remaking of Jane Eyre, plasma guns, time travel, a strong heroine. I just couldn't get into it, I guess.

I also had problems with the book being in first person narrative most of the time and then popping out into third person. It's pretty jarring when the main character disappears from a scene, but *someone* still continues describing the scene. The evil villain is also too one dimensional and too muahahahaha evil.

A delightful romp through some great and beloved literature, with plenty of fun puns (one awful character is Jack Schitt, for example) and crazy plot twists. My only regret is that I’m sure there were many references, quotes, and puns in this jam packed tale that I missed.

solid 3.5 - i really enjoyed the time travel elements of this book, but it had a lot of aspects of “early 2000s sci fi book” and not in a good way. romance subplot felt forced and was added on to the end, and a female character written by a man not very well, to name a few. it did help get me out of a reading slump, i appreciate it for that

an aside - i have not read jane eyre so i didn’t notice the ending was initially different in the book, but that’s no one’s fault but mine
