One succinct review called this "a silly book for smart people", and it is a literary romp from start to finish, elliciting actual laughs of delight at its new twists and fantastic flights of fancy. A pure delight. Cannot recommend enough. (Be sure to read Jane Eyre first, though, if you haven't yet (uncultured sloth).)
The ending made up for the slow start here, or perhaps it's just this narrators dulcet tones. The world is setup a bit towards the Xanth side of odd, but the serious take on it pulls it back nicely for me. A touch of time travel, a touch absurd, a touch Myst and a serious take on it make this a fun mashup.
The mix of absurdity and reality was a bit stretched for me, but thankfully it stayed enough on the side of reality to be interesting. The absurdity is left to simple givens about the world, would have appreciated a little more there, specifically around the time travel aspects.
The narration was fine, perhaps a tad slow and unenthusiastic though.

Read twice, because I wanted to read tje sequal bit had forgotten too many important events from this first book.
I'm a bit conflicted about this book. On the one hand, it's fun and original. But it is also a bit chaotic, unevenly paced and unfocused. Most characters were flat, and considering the importance of literature in the plot, that is ironic. It prevents the story from actually sucking you in (pun not intended, but apt).

What fun! After a long slog through "literary" books, it was so refreshing to just be able to read something and ENJOY it. No heavy thinking, no tragically complex Updikian sentences, just pure fun with inventive characters and marvelous word (as well as world) play, all wrapped up in a classic lit bow.
Do tej książki zostałam gorąco zachęcona przez koleżankę, ale, jak to często bywa, dopiero stosikowe losowanie zmusiło mnie do przekonania się, czy faktycznie jest to powieść dla mnie. Wszystko zresztą na to wskazywało - utopijna wizja Wielkiej Brytanii, gdzie wszyscy czytają, książki cieszą się ogromną estymą, a agenci literaccy walczą odgrywają zupełnie inną rolę niż ta nam znana.

Fforde stworzył całkiem nowy, spójny świat, w którym Wielka Brytania od ponad stu lat tkwi w nie kończącej się wojnie o Krym, Walia jest odrębnym państwem z pilnie strzeżoną granicą, a podróżowanie w czasie jest możliwe. Ten zarys nie brzmi dla mnie jak powieść, po którą sięgnęłabym w pierwszej kolejności, ale literatura! Tak, to ona mnie skusiła. I faktycznie jest jej sporo, ale to głównie literatura angielska.
