Thursday Next is a fabulous character. The book is a fun romp and adventure through literature. Book lovers will definitely love this series. I really enjoyed the twists and turns in the plot and am definitely looking forward to seeing where this goes next!
A very decent book, but for some reason I didn't enjoy it as much as Shades of Grey. It lacked an inventive charm that I admired. Still, a clever, well told story.
An engaging if sometimes befuddling mystery/adventure in an alternate 1985. It helps to have some knowledge of English Literature when reading, as Literature is the heart of the story. The character names are offhandedly hilarious.

My sister lent me this book probably around five years ago and I finally got round to reading it. It’s a fabulously eccentric, fun tale, set in a parallel 1985 in which people keep genetically engineered dodos as pets and time travel, and in which Wales is an independent republic and England has been at war with Russia in the Crimea for over 100 years. And the line between fiction and reality has become blurred - fictional characters are able to enter the real world, and vice-versa.
The book centres around Thursday Next, a “LiteraTec” who investigates crimes involving works of literature (which is far more popular in this parallel universe) as she pursues her nemesis, fiendish villain Acheron Hades, who is kidnapping fictional characters from books, thus ruining the stories. There’s really not much to Jane Eyre in the absence of its heroine and narrator.....She must also reckon with Jack Schitt, the man from the mysterious, powerful Goliath corporation, who wants to capture Hades himself, but whose motives for doing so are highly suspect.
It’s a completely bonkers but thoroughly enjoyable read and I’m looking forward to reading Fforde’s other books featuring Thursday. Suspend all logical thought and just enjoy the ride!!

I was sucked into this wild ride on the messiest hot mess express I’ve ever been on. I’m still processing parts of what I read. But I’ll admit, I had a really hard time putting it down.
This book is not perfect, but it’s full of name play, puns, and outrageous storylines. I laughed a lot reading this, I even found myself doing quick research on a couple of things because this book has me second guessing myself at times.
My favorite character was Mycroft. I wouldn’t mind having some of his inventions in our current world today. I really liked Tuesday, and her work ethic. The “main” story line was a bit long to get into but once it did I loved it as well.
What I didn’t like was the ending. It fell flat for me, and just didn’t fit into the wild ride we had strapped into throughout the rest of the book. I know this is a series so I understand this ending might attribute the the rest of the books, but still.
I also didn’t care for the villain. All of the excitement and thrills at having met one of the OG villains in literature and mythology soon ran its course when his true personality was shown. It didn’t fit with the villain that I know from other works, and I didn’t like his character at all. His character in this book was a lost potential.
But what do I know? Jack Schitt. Because I’m not an author, just a reader.

The first half was VERY slow, but I enjoyed it enough to plow through. I enjoyed the second half quite thoroughly, and I was reminded very much of Douglas Adams "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" in it's quirkiness. All in all, I'm glad I read it.
