I understand some of this has got to be the fact that I read it translated out of its native language, but I thought that the concept was very good and the story itself simply did not need to be that drawn out. I might not have minded if I'd felt a connection to any of the characters but I didn't, which again is probably at least partly due to the translation.
One issue I have is that the initial crime was at worst manslaughter, committed in defense, and could have been explained away much more easily resulting in minimal to no jail time, so such convolution was largely pointless. In a way it does remind me of software engineers who just keep patching increasingly convoluted code instead of redoing it to get something cleaner and simpler, so in that sense the STEM analogy holds.

I'm very picky when it comes to mystery books. There are very few authors in this genre whose books I truly enjoy, and now Higashino will be one of them.
The book is quite unconventional in its structuring, and the true mystery unravels when you least expect it. What I enjoyed the most was the psychological volleys played between the detectives and the suspect. It was a true nail-biter. Highly recommend this book to all mystery fans out there.

Yasuko divorced her abusive ex-husband, but that hasn't stopped him from finding out where she's living, and harassing her and her teenaged daughter. One night he ends up dead on Yusuko's apartment floor. Their neighbour knows what they've done and quickly devises a plan to cover up what really happened.
The characters are well developed and believable, and the story is full of twists and turns that will shock you. This book was amazing.
