Erm… I was disappointed. I LOVED Foul Lady Fortune, but this really fell flat for me. For starters, this book was probably 100 pages too long and yet the ending felt so rushed. Also, this book was too tropey for me. Everything felt overdone and it was too similar to the ending of our violent ends for me… it got to the point where everything was predictable, and the stakes weren’t high so I never really got that edge of my seat feeling. I still very much love this universe and these characters which is why I’m giving her 3 stars, but I had such big expectations for this and it ended up taking me forever to finish because I was not invested :/.

This sequel to Foul Lady Fortune offers a fascinating historical fiction lens on 1940s/50s Shanghai. While it was a pretty long read, the story remained engaging throughout—though it could have been trimmed a bit. Rosalind and Orion’s reunion after his capture was a definite highlight, filled with emotion and tension. Phoebe’s alter ego reveal was another fun twist, especially watching how others reacted. The plot did get a bit convoluted with many side characters being introduced and re-introduced, but overall, it was a strong, compelling continuation.

Update January 17 2023:

OKAY IM DONE!! I LOVED THE ENDING SJKJAS the last 25-30% were quick-paced (which I loved). ORION HONG I LOVE YOU muwahtake care of rosalind

I REALLY REALLY wanna finish this already but it's just so DRAGGING oh my god (and this is coming from someone who liked foul lady fortune). i literally get SLEEPY whenever i read this aAAAAA

UPDATE:

I still couldn't finish it :(( It's soooo dragging... nothing's happening... I'm bored... I wanna DNF but like I'm more than halfway done

Rounding up to 3 stars bc I really want to give chloe gong the benefit of the doubt…this story just didn’t keep me entertained and the plot fell short for me. An unsatisfying ending to a wonderful little collection of books with great world building and characters…whatever
