I wanted to read this because at the time John Ensign had cheated on his wife. I love political books. It is a fascinating read. I love that the Amazon original show Alpha House pays homage to these guys.

This book stressed me out to the point I repeatedly had to switch to other novels just to calm down. This encapsulates the harrowing truth of power in America and its corruption. It was an extremely difficult read, not due to the writing, but to the content. The book itself is extremely well written and very straightforward, with a very matter-of-fact tone that lets you put your own views on the facts. Please read, but take your time.
Jeff Sharlet is an amazing researcher and writer. Every section with the book is filled with a detailed account of his past and that of 'The Family'. While this book is a great read, prepare yourself mentally for the journey ahead. This is a book you must think over and make time to make sure you really read it.
With that being said, there were times where the book dragged a bit and the information overloaded your senses. Going in with the mindset of a book rich in history is a must to enjoy.

The Family began quite well and very interesting. However, once Sharlet began to delve into the history of how the Family came to be, I lost interest.
I abandoned this about 1/2 through; might revisit in the future.

I wish I'd gotten more out of this book, but I fear that my knowledge of DC powerbrokers (and staffs of DC powerbrokers) of the past 50 years is just too weak. (Also my knowledge of the rebuilding of Germany after WW2.) I spent a lot of time feeling like I was thisclose to really learning something interesting.
That said, the section dealing with religious revivalism and awakenings in the nineteenth century was first-rate.
