I loved this book. In the author's own words:
"Personal stories work for other people when those stories become both paradigms and parables. [...] The story crosses the threshold from my world into yours."
I feel that is exactly what happened here. I could relate so well to her storied experiences because she writes not only eloquently, but also parabolizes her experiences. I also really enjoyed the writing style, a sort of edited stream of consciousness where stories are first told, then analyzed or vice-versa and time isn't always linear. It gives the impression of a life narrated as it is unfolding. In that way it is not dissimilar to a diary entry. Very much edited for the public, of course. It is authentic, funny, uplifting, occasionally sad and a little bit tragic (or a least I think Mrs. W is). I'm so glad I picked it up.

Indrukwekkend boek met prachtig portret van 'Mevrouw Winterson', de pleegmoeder van de schrijfster die verandert in een gevaarlijke, rancuneuze kleuter als haar goede bedoelingen in het water vallen.

I have never read anything by Winterson before, and apparently if I had I may have liked this better. There are things that were compelling and kept me reading, but I'm not quite sure I actually enjoyed much of the experience.
Enjoyed this. Mainly because I could relate to her emotions (the writing felt so honest and most of the time straightforward!). But also because of her appreciation for literature. Also narration was on point.
I was a little annoyed at first with mentions of Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, because I was not too fond of it. Also Nabokov bashing??? And then she never says whether she still hates him?
