The pacing feels rushed, and every conflict resolves too easily and neatly for believability. But more importantly, this is a sweet, gentle story, and I genuinely cared about all the characters and wish Frasier had given us more time with them. (Except Jonah. Goodbye, Jonah.)

loved this!! the illustrations were great. i think the topics around cis people not policing how trans people should react to transphobia is very important. all around had me kicking and screaming from how cute it was. i loved annie&bebe and could read 100+ more pages of them!!

⚠️: transphobia, fatphobia, sexual harassment, body shaming, stalking, deadnaming, dysphoria, bullying

In order to complete my 2021 reading challenge, after finishing Jane Austen's bibliography (minus Mansfield Park), I checked out four graphic novels from the library: Thirsty Mermaids, books 1 - 2 of the Legend Of Korra: Ruins of Empire trilogy (they didn't have the third available), and this.

I'm not usually good at reading books that are released the year they are released. This year might actually be a record (4 including this one). Boy am I glad I decided to end the year with this book though.

This book centers around Annie (the blonde girl in the cover) who is super-smart and has close to a 4.0 if not a 4.0, but has problems interacting with people and has no after-school activities, which her guidance councellor wants her to fix. Annie's mom encourages her to join cheerleading, just like she did when she was in school. Although Annie doesn't want to at first, she gives in because she doesn't want to let her mom down.

The other main character is Bebe (the brunette on the cover), who is a trans girl under a lot of pressure from her parents to keep doing well in school or else they won't fund her transition any longer. She has a habit of taking on a lot more than she can handle because she doesn't want to say no/cause fights with people and be cast as "one of those trans girls".

Although the book is very sweet and focused on friendships formed between Annie and Bebe, as well as friendships between the entire cheer squad and Annie and Bebe, it doesn't shy away from talking about real issues. We get to see lots of discussions of what Bebe has to go through in order to "pass", as well as discussions about why Annie can stand up for herself and make a scene vs. why Bebe can't do that. I was definitely impressed with how the authors didn't shy away from talking about these serious topics - and yet, still simultaneously gave us a happy story for both Annie and Bebe.

The girls learn from each other; not just Annie and Bebe, but the entire cheer squad. The cheer squad also learn how to be better friends to Bebe and how to listen to her and what she actually wants, as opposed to what they think she should want.

All in all an absolutely WONDERFUL book and a WONDERFUL ending note for this year for me. I will be putting this one on my wishlist so that I can buy it in the future and read it over and over again. <3
