I picked this up to read while nursing, and it is FAR too slow for middle-of-the-night reading. Maybe I’ll come back to it when I’m more well-rested.

Have to start this review by embarrassingly admitting…I skipped like 50 pages from Parts 1 and 2. I tried, I really did. It was a struggle to get into it, I was forcing myself to read it, and it was taking FOREVER. So, I skipped to Part 3 of the book, and started with Dories.
From that point on it was excellent! The different backstories leading up to the incidents that unfolded, all of the people involved, I couldn’t put it down (from page 89 onwards). The Ghost Boat chapter was on par with any fictional thriller I’ve ever read, these stories were intense.
I had to take pauses to watch videos of people making their way down the Colorado River, I read about the run so many times, I feel like I know the river myself. I was even getting started costing out my own multi-week dory trip down the rapids, the adrenaline from this book was addicting!
Honestly, the book probably deserves a 5 star rating, but I told myself if I had to skip such a large chunk, the most I should do is 4. Perhaps I’ll go back at some point and read through the beginning, but I’m perfectly happy with the majority of what I got through, so we’ll just have to leave it as is for now.

Great book about the Grand Canyon. If you have any interest in the Grand Canyon or the Colorado River, read this.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was repetitive though. Almost felt like the author was trying to go for length so much so that I felt like you lost the pacing of the story from time to time. Otherwise, I learned so much about the history of the Colorado, guiding, geology and so much more. Recommending this book to many people already.

This is a well written, well researched non-fiction book. But BOY does it get into the weeds. It doesn’t even get to the speed run referenced in the title until about 2/3rds of the way through the book. Definitely skimmed some of it.
