Some people will find it too slow in places, but overall I was fascinated. Now I read all the little stickers on the fruits in the supermarket, though...

A good Kingsolver non-fiction, that tells the story of her attempt to eat locally and sustainably for a year. I found it quite interesting, although myopic in some of its views about the practicality of going local. There are sidebars by her husband and daughter, which, though interesting, were somewhat distracting and I ignored for the most part. Unlike some other reviewers, I did not find this book preachy.

I'm torn between feeling annoyed with Kingsolver's holier-than-thou attitude (no bananas- ever!), and smug about the number of things she discussed that we already do in our house (participate in a CSA, eat local, seasonal food-except for bananas- can food for winter months and set local grown meat).
There were things I found fascinating and all and all, I thought it was a great read. But it will be a cold day in hell before I give up my bananas, kiwis, mangos and pineapples. Just sayin.

Ambitious - and a model for something I'd like to pull off... one day... :)

This book was beautiful and inspiring.

Of course this approach to eating locally is out of reach to most folks who have not inherited a large tract of agricultural property and who do not have the career flexibility of a best-selling author. Nevertheless... I loved reading about their experiences and have made an effort to start eating more local foods.

While the essays and recipes made this a nice family project... I found that they disrupted the flow a bit and halfway through I just started skipping them.

Overall, a lovely agrarian fantasy book.

Page 17 and I already love this book.

I really liked this the second time too. While it does get a little preachy at times (okay, to be fair, it's preachy about global warming and changing the way we do things which OMG YES OH NO) overall I really enjoyed the content, and I love her as a writer. I skipped Steven's portions this time, they interrupt the flow and I can't be bothered to go back and read them again. I don't recommend skipping them, I read them the first time - but it wasn't a priority to me this time.

This book was excellent.  Barbara Kingsolver is a gifter writer, and her non-fiction books are no exception.  I really enjoyed this look into her personal life and her personal quest to eat better, better the environment, and truly stick to her purpose - to eat only what she could get locally.  The book will make you hungry and you will want to run out and buy seeds and start your own movement after you hear her passion.  The whole family was on board - even her youngest.

I am so glad I found this book.  I read if for a reading challenge, and it did not disappoint.  I could not put it down.
