Great book! I thought I knew a lot about healthy eating but I am learning a lot! I have Celiac disease and never eat processed foods but while reading this book I went to the local organic market and started looking for local products! I recommend this book to anyone! Great read

I can't say enough good things about this book. My book group read it last month (I know, I'm late as usual), and if not for their recommendation then I probably wouldn't have picked it up to read.

The book is about eating from local food sources as opposed to big industrial farms and CAFOs. It really made me think about where I get my food. I have a whole new respect for farmers and gardeners. I really can't even do it justice by reviewing it for those of you who haven't read it. This book is part memoir, part nonfiction. The statistics were astonishing- if every family ate just 1 meal a week that was made up of locally grown food then we would save something like 1.1 MILLION barrels of oil a WEEK!!!

The book talks about the advantages for the consumer and for the economy about eating local. The author also provides resources on how to incorporate local foods into your diet (recipes, etc). I think this is a must read for everyone. Even if you think the topic doesn't interest you, believe me, this will amaze you!

I only gave four stars because it took three tries and two years to get past the first three chapters. However, like the Harry Potter series, it was worth the third attempt. Kingsolver's imagery allows the reader to feel right along side of her as she struggles and plays with living almost entirely off of the fruits of her land and not grocery stores for a year.

Only made it about 100 pages in...and am heeding the advice of friends who said, "read it while it's still garden season here in Buffalo". I loved what I read so far; quite ambitious project for a family, but one I'd love to try with modifications ;) I couldn't do without coffee or chocolate. I promise to pick this one up again in the spring!

August 2012. Finally finished. Not because it wasn't interesting, but because I've been CRAZY busy! Beautiful. Ambitious, for sure...not totally sure I could replicate what Kingsolver and Family did, but I'd love the opportunity to try! Makes me very sad that I left behind my mini-garden in Buffalo, and that we're in an apartment now. Something to consider as we look for a house.

The Poisonwood Bible is one of my favorite books, so I am excited to read this non-fiction by Kingsolver, particularly since it is about mindful eating.

LOVED this book. Life-changing perspective.

If you've read Michael Pollan, much of this will seem like old news. But Kingsolver's descriptions of her year living off the land with her family on their farm in Virginia are inspiration, comedy and poetry all rolled together. (The chapters on the turkeys are worth the whole book!) And her daughter Camille's recipes look pretty good too.
informative inspiring medium-paced

I really enjoyed listening to this. If you as a reader are interested in where your food comes from or have an interest in growing and raising your own food, this is a great first hand narrative to learn what it would be like. If you don’t care where your food comes from or about eating locally, I would not recommend this because you will find it preachy. I personally fall in the first category and I enjoyed hearing Barbara and her family’s experience during their first season of eating seasonally and growing their own food.

Really, really enjoyed this book. I hope I took away enough to get started on my own local food journey and I imagine I'll read the book again someday soon to soak up more!

Interesting to read how they started their journey to eat local, grow their own food, (including some very candid descriptions about their chickens). Learned a lot. I like her fiction better though.

Actually makes me want to eat vegetables. No small feat, that.
