I didn’t think a book on literary criticism and rare book collection would be the best book I read this year, but here we are! I absolutely adored this book and learning about Jane Austen’s literary ancestors. This book made me think deeply about who is and is not included in the literary canon. I was an English major in college, and despite taking a course on the evolution of English novels (which included Austen), I had never heard of most of these authors. My “to-read” list is longer than ever now! I highly recommend this book.

I can't wait to recommend this to so many people.
It's a feminist look at 18th/19th century canon, starting with Austen as a reference point. I know and love Austen but while I've heard of several of these women whose writing influenced hers, I haven't read any of them. Why is that? (I have read Richardson though...) It's like in Jane Austen Book Club, where only one of the members realizes that Udolfo is a real story and actually reads it.
Love the defense of romance novels, the book collecting, the way the stories of the writer's lives are weaved into the analysis of their works and their place in the greater literary work.
The audio version was well done and worth listening to.
In summary, you know it's a good book because after reading it I now have dozens more books to add to my TBR.
