I picked up this book because it was listed as a satire, a genre I always enjoy reading when I get a chancel. Also, the first few sentences I read captured my attention. Admittedly it took me longer than usual to finish it, though that wasn't entirely the book's fault. I found the need to take a break from it to let everything soak in before coming back.
This book has a brilliant and extremely relevant concept: the idea of the internet being implanted in a person's brain honestly doesn't seem that far-fetched. It also hits on a lot of concerns that would occur because of such readily accessed information, like how schools would operate and how social interactions would change. The worst-case-scenario plot is fairly predictable but still chilling.
My main issue with this book was its narrator. And not the futuristic slang or the way he told the story, since I could follow that fairly easily once I got into it, but rather just him as a character. While I think this was intentional by the author, it was difficult to come back to the story because I was so angry and disgusted with the character's behavior.
Overall, though, I thought this a good read that touched upon something that is becoming increasingly more dominating in our world.

Although I like the premise of this novel, it doesn’t deliver. The forced sci-fi vocabulary and watered-down characterization take away from the theme development. It could have been a YA take on Brave New World, but it falls flat because there are too many loose ends.

I first read this book over twenty years ago when I was exploring dystopian literature. I kept thinking about it over the years and wanted to see if it held up to my memories. It is still very thought provoking.

My son is reading this for English Class and said I should read it too. Its a bit frightening that this isn't all that unrealistic a possibility.

Read this for English class and just wasn’t into it.
HEYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
Guess what?
No really....guess.
Alright, alright, I'll tell you:
I DIDN'T FINISH!
Gasp.
-_-
This should not be a surprise. About one in ten books I don't finish (boo me). Some books just don't appeal to me (at least, at the time). This was one of those books.
But this is a new low for me. I mean, I didn't even get through the first chapter. In fact...I only read one page. Bad Imani. I shouldn't even really be reviewing this, let alone rating it. The only thing I remember about it was the weird slang they had it in. Didn't like it. So I put it down. I just didn't realize that I wouldn't pick it back up again...except to turn it back into the library.
Oops.
I'll probably try again some other time. For now...
Unrated.

A clever and unsettling look at a consumer-driven future, but it fell short in character development and plot in my opinion. The audiobook really pulled me in with those in-your-head ads. It felt like I was inside the character’s brain, which was both cool and creepy, like a Black Mirror episode. But the main character’s voice kinda threw me off. It reminded me of a male version of that “And one time, at band camp…” girl from American Pie.
