Weird, sad, and a bit reminiscent of [b:A Clockwork Orange|227463|A Clockwork Orange|Anthony Burgess|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348339306s/227463.jpg|23596].

It is a distopian fiction following a tragic and quite pathetically realistic teenage love story love story as the primary focal point while the world around them is crumbling. Quite fantastic. Extremely politically relevant, almost feels prophetic in certain aspects.

Had this book been written 3, 5 or even 10 years ago I would have shrugged it off as a well crafted book reflecting the dark future presented by the digital age. However this book was written TWENTY TWO years ago. Cellphones were still very much a novelty and the internet was still in its early days, yet M.T. Anderson managed to simultaneously predict today's present and warn us of an even worse future. Today, smartphones are virtually glued to our hands, accompanying us in our relationships, shopping, reading, entertainment, and anything that can be possibly done with the use of an Internet connection. Make no mistake, aimlessly scrolling through hours of pre-calibrated content littered with ads, product placements, and nonsensical memes. This is our feed. This is our future.

Vivid (and all too possible near future) worldbuilding, great characters, some gorgeous prose. Only wish it was longer.
