I've wanted to read this since discovering Holly on ABCs Back to Nature. I enjoyed her commentary on some of the stunningly beautiful places they visited as part of that series. I added this book to my hold list at the library, in the meantime following Holly on Instagram and reading her blog. I kind of knew that this book was going to be good but after sinking into the book it was way more than I expected.
Yes, the first couple of chapters are hard to read, and there are many instances in the book where you just grieve for Alice. But where there is dark, there is also light - beautifully portrayed by the characters of Sally, Candy Baby, Twig, and Lulu plus even in a sense - canine pals Toby, Harry, and Pip. It is my thought that the descriptions of flowers and plants in the book add to that light. They emphasize the fragility of humans.
Holly's descriptions of the landscapes within this book are just beautiful. It becomes a character within the books.
Two themes run through the book - domestic violence and fairy tales, the later often being a warning about the former. As an avid reader of fairy tales in my childhood - you consider them as just stories without understanding they have a hidden meaning.
I think the feelings borne from this book will stay with me for a long time. I can't wait to read her next book.

A heartbreakingly beautiful story. I loved the language of flowers, so I’m not surprised I loved this one too as there were similar themes. It was a long story, spanning over two decades, but I really enjoyed it even when it almost made me cry. *possible spoilers ahead*
I would have given this 5 stars but I truly disliked her grandma June. I still don’t understand her reasoning for lying to Alice and what she did to auggie. That part really broke my heart. Also… what ever happened to her dog Toby
