It's like a fairytale. It's so magical, written in a really earnest kind of way. Unapologetic in being fantastical and magical and whimsical. But also really tough. There's some really awful things too
Graphic: Death, Domestic abuse
4.5 stars. The writing is beautiful. The pain and grief experienced by many of the characters is felt while reading this, but so is their strength and resilience. I loved the incorporation of the healing power of nature
Are you one of those people who, when watching a preview for a movie or a show and it flashes across the screen "based on the best selling novel..." immediately goes to find the book to read first? Well, I am. I came across this book when watching a preview for it on Amazon Prime. 4 star reviews. I'm in!
Ultimately, this is a book about generational trauma and the hopes of breaking the cycle. The characters, the wring, and the story development were strong. I'd give the first half of this book 4-5 stars and the last half maybe 2 stars. There was a certain amount of magic that was lost towards the last 1/2 to 1/3 of the novel (trying to stay away from spoilers here,) when Alice just became this stranger in a strange land making strange choices. But there is also a certain truth to that. Some people just stumble through life trying to find their footing. But the way it went was just a bit hard to swallow for me. The instalove that just went down a dark hole. Snap out of it, girl.
Did anyone else feel like Alice was living in the 1960s sometimes? It was a bit bizarre. If it hadn't been for people constantly remarking on how they looked her up on the flower farm's website and the occasional mention of someone using a computer, I would have thought this book took place in a totally different time period.

The writing was detailed and the storytelling was beautiful but there was just too much pervasive misery for me! I kept waiting for some small spark of joy but it never really came. At some point all the random secret keeping and wounds that could have been healed had anyone been truthful felt like too much.
