This moved too quickly for a narrative that relies heavily on a deep feeling for and understanding of the characters, you’re expected to love certain ones without the opportunity of getting to know them. Alice Hart lives many through the span of this story and it’s just too much to take in. It’s a fine illustration of intergenerational trauma and its impact, but characters come and go too quickly for you to develop the understanding of them the author expects of you. Wasn’t quite my cuppa, but a fine story nonetheless.

Got quite bored. Too much detail. And I felt I could see all the storylines coming and really couldn't be bothered with them.

Good book, beautifully read,  I hate the thought of her flowers being burnt though

I loved this book! I discovered it after coming across the miniseries on Amazon Prime. The book is quite different from the TV series. The story follows Alice Hart who is taken in by her grandmother, the proprietary of a massive flower farm, after a family tragedy. Her grandmother harbors many secrets about her past.
The story was beautiful and ties in the Victorian meanings of flowers which was a nice touch.

I did the thing I hate to do, and that is, I watched the television adaptation of this before I read the book. As usual, the book is so much better, and more importantly, it differs from the adaptation in ways that make it much more meaningful and palatable.

Alice Hart is a young girl with an abusive father. She dreams of the unthinkable. When a tragedy happens, she finds her life changed in ways she never imagined.

This is a book filled with pain and loss, but also the relationships and love that breathe life into our souls. Sometimes the lessons of our pasts are hard to understand until they come around again.

4.5 stars.

Nothing like a release of a tv series to push you to read a TBR! And I’m glad I finally did! Great story and told so well. I enjoyed the links to the flowers and their meanings especially as it referenced so many Australian regions. The story was sad but had enough hope that things will change.
I’m looking forward to the tv series however I’m sure there will be so many differences but as long as they do this book justice, I’ll be happy!
