This book is a work of art. It's one of my go to "I'm bored." reads. Originally, I got my paperback copy from my old babysitter, who was always enthusiastic about my reading. I first read it in... 3rd grade, I think? I loved it, but didn't fully understand how genius the plot is. Now that I'm NOT in third grade, I can really appreciate this beautiful book, and how it works.

Really great book, especially for any middle school readers. But this book is also an amazing read for all ages. It's a book that after reading, I had to buy. It was a page turner, and well worth the buy.

I'm really bitter I didn't read this series when I was younger. Young Amber would have loved the crap out of this.

This was a very quick read (one day). I thought the story was good, I wasn't able to predict everything that happened. The quarry speaking thing was a little strange to me. I thought it ended a little abruptly and I wished there was more in it about Marda and the relationship of the sisters. Overall, a good fun read.

Really good book. parts were slightly predictable (imo) but the ending really was great. Very good, sort of obvious that it's meant for a younger audience, but I thought it really had some elements that were great as an adult reader

We listened to this as an honor selection for newbery bingo. We enjoyed it and found it engaging. It wasn’t perfect but in the scope of newbery books this was one of the better ones. I was worried at first that it would be too similar to Elle enchanted and we would get them confused reading them so close together but after the first few chapters it differentiates itself. I felt like this book was split in two sections: before the ball and after the ball. While Reid said he liked the post ball stuff better he also admitted that section was a bit scary. I kind of hated the main reader in the full cast audiobook production, so might not listen to that version again. I will also say that the story is a low key love story so I might recommend it for kids a bit older than six but it’s petty tame so I think that stuff goes over a younger kids head, maybe 8-10 is the best age?
